Spokane is known as "The Lilac City" and is one of the most outstanding places in the country to live!
We are blessed with four distinct seasons, and with 50 lakes and rivers within 50 miles, mountains, and a location close to Idaho, Montana, and Canada, recreational opportunities abound. Spokane is also just 275 miles to Seattle and the Pacific coast.
The "official" population of the city of Spokane is approximately 192,000. However, the city limits do not encompass the entire Spokane area, and the true greater Spokane area population is over 300,000. This population includes the cities of Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake, and the unincorporated populous areas of the greater Spokane area.
Downtown Spokane is blessed with amenities. Gorgeous Riverfront Park, over 100 acres in size with the majestic Spokane River flowing through its midst, is a wonderful feature. A true renaissance has overtaken downtown in the past several years. New development, upper end specialty stores (Nordstrom, Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, Banana Republic, Williams & Sonoma, and Bon Macy's just to name a few), dozens of superb restaurants, and the numerous condominium projects that line the streets are a testament to the vibrant, exciting downtown Spokane scene! Entertainment facilities include the 12,000 seat Spokane Veterans Arena, the 2700 seat INB Performing Arts Center, The Metroplolitan Theater Performing Arts Center, The Big Easy (New Orleans style concert/events center and restaurant), and the fabulous 1930's art deco style Fox Theatre (home of the Spokane Symphony) all host incredible and diverse events. Spokane is the hometown of the Spokane Symophony, the Spokane Jazz Orchestra, and a regular stop for Broadway plays and musicals and tons of nationally touring acts.
Spokane is also a growing winemaking region, with its close proximity to the Columbia Valley (and the Red Mountain, Walla Walla Valley, Yakima Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, and Wahluke Slope AVA's). We are home to such fine wineries such as Barrister, Robert Karl, Townshend Cellars, Grande Ronde, Lone Canary, Arbor Crest, Latah Creek, Mountain Dome, and Catarina. Cheers!
Spokane is a major medical hub, both in care and education. It is home to Deaconess Hospital, Sacred Heart Hospital, Valley Medical Center and Hospital, Holy Family Hospital, St. Lukes Rehabilitation, a Shriner's Hospital, a VA Medical Center, and hundreds of the best physicians and specialists in the western United States.
Our education opportunities are also enviable. Local school districts such as Mead, Central Valley, and Spokane's District 81 are nationally recognized for excellence. Spokane Community College and Spokane Falls Community College offer dozens of different AA and AAS degrees, with transferable credits to one of the excellent colleges and universities near by. Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University, Whitworth College, and the Washington State University extension school are all within 20 minutes of downtown. Washington State University is just 75 miles south of Spokane, and the University of Idaho is just another 8 miles down the road in Moscow, Idaho.
